Beer Marinated Shrimp- Life Food and Beer

Tender shrimp marinated in a mixture of garlic, jalapenos, citrus, and sour beer then grilled until ready. The perfect summer time recipe.

Beer Marinated Shrimp- Life Food and Beer

I have a new love! Sour Beers! Yum, I love them. Everywhere we go now, I’m looking for them. Don’t get me wrong, I love a hoppy IPA just as much as the next beer geek, but there is something about that tartness I can’t get enough of. I can also eat an entire container of SweeTARTS in one sitting, so that probably has something to do with it. TBC recently had a Blueberry Berliner Weisse on tap, and it’s all I wanted. I think the bartender was in shock when I didn’t order my usual brown ale.

For those of you wondering what a sour beer is, no it’s not a beer that’s gone bad. It’s a style of beer that has a sour, tart, taste to it. They’re usually acidic with high carbonation. Plus they’re usually low in alcohol, so I can enjoy more and not have a buzz.

For this recipe, I used a Flanders Red Ale. Vichtenaar from Verhaeghe Vichte to be exact. One of the guys at Specialty Beer Cellar recommended it. I originally picked this up with the hopes of making a pie. The oak flavors were a little too savory for a dessert, but worked great as a marinade for my grilled shrimp. I added a few more savory flavors and some citrus to really make them pop.

You can use another style of beer if you’re not a fan of sours or can not find one. IPA, Pale Ale, Wheat, would all work.

Other Beer to Try:

These marinated shrimp would also be great in my Shrimp Fajitas Lettuce Wrap or a Shrimp Ceviche, but you’ll have to wait for that recipe 🙂

  1. I have to admit I don’t know anything about beer, but I do know I like it in marinades and beer batters! 🙂 This shrimp sounds delicious!

  2. Oh those shrimp are so gorgeous!! I love beer marinades on just about anything. My husband is quite the microbrew beer enthusiast (I am not), so I will ask him about where to find sour beers, and if I’ve ever unknowingly tried one! 🙂

    1. I think they’re a great intro beer. They’re low in alcohol and bitterness. Really, they do not taste like beer. If you like tart flavors, you may like them.
